What is Pharmacogenetics?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t

Pharmacogenetics (PGx) investigates the interaction of drugs with the different genetic characteristics of each individual. As early as the 1950s, the Heidelberg human geneticist Friedrich Vogel used clinical observations to identify the interplay between a person’s genetic makeup and his or her personal response to a drug. He coined the term “pharmacogenetics” for this phenomenon.<\/p>\n

In the human body, a complex system of enzymes and other transport proteins as well as receptor structures control the uptake of a drug, its distribution in the body, its biochemical conversion and degradation, and its excretion. A person\u2019s genetic makeup determines the individual enzyme equipment that a person has available to process active substances. Genetic variations affect the functioning of these enzymes and may play a role in the overall mechanism of drug metabolism and drug action.<\/p>\n

The genetic variations determining metabolism are specific to each drug. As a result, the standard dosage of a drug may not achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Reduced excretion, on the other hand, can quickly lead to overdoses with corresponding complaints and side effects.<\/p>\n

By determining a metabolisation type, pharmacogenetics allows prediction of the individual effect of a drug. In medicine, the term metabolisation refers to the biochemical conversion or degradation of a substance by the body’s own enzyme systems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
